# September is Suicide Awareness Month: Celebrating the Healing Power of Dogs

## A Personal Salty Mutts Story

September is Suicide Awareness Month—a time to shed light on an issue that too often gets tucked away. At Salty Mutts, we believe in humor, sandy paws, and wagging tails—but we also know that dogs can do more than make us laugh. For some, they’re the difference between giving up and holding on.

Salty Mutts isn’t just a fun shop with cheeky tees and eco-friendly toys—it’s rooted in something deeply personal. My dad is a veteran who lives with PTSD. His service dog, Logan, has been his anchor through some of his darkest storms.

Logan isn’t just a loyal companion—he’s trained to ground my dad during panic attacks, provide comfort through sleepless nights, and remind him every day that he doesn’t fight his battles alone.

Watching their bond is what inspired me to build Salty Mutts. This brand is about joy and playfulness, yes—but it’s also about honoring the life-changing power of dogs, whether they’re chasing waves or saving lives.

More Than Companions: Canines on a Mission

Service dogs aren’t just tail-waggers with big goofy grins. For veterans, they’re therapists, protectors, and constant reminders to keep moving forward. They can interrupt harmful thought patterns, ease anxiety, and restore a sense of independence. One paw at a time, they bring light back into lives shadowed by trauma.

Organizations Leading the Charge

There are so many incredible organizations working tirelessly to support veterans and their service dogs—but here are just a couple of my personal favorites:

🐾 Triggered 22 – This organization brings awareness to veteran suicide, shedding light on the heartbreaking statistic that 22 veterans are lost each day. Their mission is to spark conversation, spread resources, and support those who served.

🐾 K9s for Warriors – As the largest provider of trained service dogs for veterans in the U.S., they’re saving lives on both ends of the leash—rescuing shelter dogs and pairing them with veterans who need them most.

How You Can Help

Support looks different for everyone. Donate if you can, volunteer if you’re able, or even just share the message so more people know the impact service dogs have. Every little ripple helps make waves of change.

At Salty Mutts, we’ll always celebrate the quirky, messy, hilarious side of dogs—but we’ll also honor their serious side: their ability to heal hearts, save lives, and remind us that life’s better with a salty mutt by your side.

The Importance of Awareness

Awareness is key. It’s not just about knowing that September is Suicide Awareness Month; it’s about understanding the struggles that many face. Each story is unique, and each journey is personal. By sharing our experiences, we can create a community of support that uplifts and empowers.

Dogs as Emotional Support

Dogs have an incredible ability to sense emotions. They know when we’re feeling down and offer comfort in their own special ways. Whether it’s a gentle nudge with their nose or a wagging tail that seems to say, “I’m here for you,” their presence can be a balm for our souls.

Building a Community

Let’s build a community that celebrates not just the joy of having dogs but also the serious role they play in our lives. Share your stories, connect with others, and let’s create a dialogue that encourages understanding and compassion. Together, we can make a difference.

This Suicide Awareness Month, we honor the veterans who’ve given so much, the dogs who give them hope, and families like mine who know firsthand just how powerful that bond can be.
